The Little Gem cultivar of the Southern magnolia has a compact upright growth habit. It grows at slow rate to a height of 30 - 35 feet and an 8 - 12 foot spread. The fragrant magnolia flowers begin when the tree is only 3 - 4 feet tall. The Little Gem forms a dense pyramidal or oval shape, making it suited for a screen or hedge plant.
